Beginners Chinese (Mandarin)
After the Year 1 (Beginner) Course, students will be able to understand basic vocabularies and phrases for everyday expressions. They are expected to know how to introduce themselves, communicate confidently in everyday situations and further interact in social conversations on a basic level.
What will I learn:
In term 1, we will start to learn both grammar and topics in daily life. For the grammatical structures, we will introduce Pinyin pronunciation; basic sentence structures; questions words; past tense; common measure words; negative verbs, etc. For the learning topics covered, we will include introduction of yourself and others; exchange greetings; talk about nationality and age. Paying compliments and respond to compliment; ask and tell the time; make appointment, etc.
In term 2, we will learn the grammatical structures (present continues tense; time expressions; how to use some question words; ordinal numbers, etc.). we covers the topics (describe your family; discuss occupation and work place; find out dates and time; talk about the weather; ask and give directions; talk about traveling plans; make a purchase and do some bargaining, etc.)
In term 3, for the grammatical structures, we will learn ( use some words for the comparison; describe a past experience; make comparison using adjective and complement; use ordinal numbers to measure words; position some adverbs; etc.)
The topics we will cover (make simple comparison; ask opinion; order food in a restaurant; discuss food preference; give suggestions about travel routes; book hotel; buying clothes; make complaints, take transportation, etc.)
Teaching and Assessment Method:
The course will emphasize on the language that is used in authentic situations. Students will be working on listening and speaking as well as grammar in context. Further grammar exercises and readings will be set as homework. Therefore, students will be asked to practice more after class. The evaluation will take place at the end of the course.
No previous knowledge of Chinese is required if you joined us from the first term. If you would like to join us in the middle of term, some basic Chinese skills will be required.
There are 3 terms for Chinese Mandarin Beginners course. Each term last 8 weeks (16 hours).
Term 1 aimed at students who are complete beginners.
Term 2 aims for students with some basic knowledge of Mandarin (Previously learned Mandarin for about 16 hours or equivalently).
Terms 3 aims for students who have done 32 hours Mandarin learning before or equivalently.
Beginners level 2 class
Ms Tingting Wang(BA in Journalism, MA in communication, MSc in IPP). She has being awarded the IPA International Certification for Chinese Language Teacher, PRC, First Class User of Mandarin, and has gained massive teaching experience as a Chinese language tutor for nearly 8 years in China, Belgium, and UK.
