What will you achieve and what can we offer the best help?

            • You will be given an official certificate authorised by our art centre upon the completion of each term.

            • Calligraphy contests will be held periodically, and the best students will be give special awards for their performance.

            • Towards the end of each term, students will be given the chance to produce their own creative calligraphic work, which can be used together as an exhibition.

            • We will constantly review with you on the contents of our teaching, e.g. the proportion of history and calligraphy, to suit the best interest and need of you.

            What will you learn?

            • The basic apparatuses used in calligraphy writing - Brush, Ink, Paper, and Inkstone are called the ‘four treasures of calligraphy’. You will familiarise with them and learn to use them professionally.

              • For example, you will learn hands-on how to prepare a brand new brush, soak it in ink correctly, and preserve it in the right way.

            • Chinese characters are built on strokes, therefore all calligraphy learning start with the eight basic types of strokes termed the ‘Eight-Yong’ strokes.

              • You will learn one or two strokes and their numerous variations in each lesson, as well as characters of increasing complexity built on these strokes.

              • All the secret nuances of how strokes are written, e.g. the three crucial steps to finish a horizontal stroke, will be explained to you in great detail. Our calligraphy teacher will make sure that you can write these correctly.

            • How to structure a Chinese character is as important as how each stroke is written.

              • You will first learn simple characters, and then more complex ones that are built up on these simple characters.

              • Our calligrapher will taught you the art of ‘spacing and structure’ in constructing characters, and you will see that once you know these rules, you can also write very beautiful calligraphy.

            • Kai Shu (楷书)will undoubtedly be taught to you first. Once you have built a good foundation, you can choose to learn either Li Shu(隶书), Xing Shu(行书), or Xiao Kai (小楷)(very small Kai Shu), depending on your preference and Kai Shu (楷书)achievements.

            • In every lesson, you will be exposed to different calligraphic genres and the styles in each genre.

              • This will not only develop your ability to review and appreciate calligraphic works, but also help your own calligraphy writing.

              • We will also teach you the historic and hieroglyphic significance of these genres and styles.

            • Writing calligraphy allows one to appreciate hieroglyph, the origin of languages, and significantly help the learning of Chinese language.

            What is Callligraphy?

            • It is the art of writing Chinese characters in the most elegant way, with either brushes or modern pens.

              • Throughout thousands of years, calligraphers have developed and perfected a number of different genres and styles, in which the hieroglyphic Chinese characters can be written.

              • In ancient times, the level of a scholar’s education can often be characterised by the scholar’s penmanship; nowadays, calligraphers, especially those who specialise in using brushes, are highly regarded Chinese artists.

            • A symbol of Chinese culture, calligraphy is one of the most precious Chinese art form that still lives on today.

              • Hence, each calligraphic genre represents a unique era, while each styles within the genre could be related to distinct dynasties or empires.

              • The samples used for learning usually tell accounts of Chinese history in various periods

            • There are many genres in calligraphy, of which three are most commonly used and learnt:

              • Kai Shu (楷书), or regular script, is the most common genre. All current Chinese official documents, books, online resources, etc. are printed in fonts of the Kai Shu genre. In calligraphy learning, one needs to lay a strong foundation of Kai Shu before learning other genres.

              • Li Shu(隶书), or official ancient script, is the standard genre used in the Han Dynasty more than 2000 years ago. This genre is more solemn, and often found inscribed in stones. Li Shu is usually chosen to be the second genre in calligraphy learning.

              • Xing Shu(行书), or cursive script, is arguably the most difficult genre, and often used to display a calligraphy master’s skills. It requires very strong foundation in the Kai Shu genre, and requires the most practice. But Xing Shu scripts are undoubtedly one of the most artistic ones.
